Growing up as a little girl, I can remember watching World Vision on TV. I remember feeling like I wanted to do that someday; I wanted to go there and be the lady on the TV, the one helping all the children. I can remember looking into their eyes through the television screen and seeing no hope for the future. It was there that I knew I wanted to help, and as soon as I got old enough, I wanted to sponsor as many children as I could, and I wanted to adopt as many as I could. For as long as I can remember, missions has been on my heart; there has been a deep burning inside of me to reach out to the poor and needy, to look to someone who is worse off than me and help them, bring them hope. There was something about looking into the eyes of these children in Third World Countries that has been branded on my heart for as long as I can remember.
In 2005 I was in college, doing well playing on the soccer team, getting myself a good education; things were great. Then, one day I came home from church and everything changed. My mom and I lay on my brother’s bed, and I shared with her about the visions I had. I knew I had a calling on my life, and that I couldn’t play games anymore. I told my mom that day that I was quitting college and going to Bible School. I remember saying to my mom that I knew I was being called; I didn’t know it all, but I knew it was pretty big, and I knew I couldn’t play games anymore. There was an urgency inside of me that I knew I had to listen to. My mom recently reminded me of this and said, “You even cried that day, and that is something I very seldom saw you do. You shared the vision about you standing on that platform singing. You saw the wind, the waves, and all the dark skinned children with their eyes so big and hungry; there were people being saved and healed. You said, “Mom, I think I’m called to missions, and I have had a desire in my heart to travel since I was a little girl, and I believe God placed it there for a reason.”
I had an encounter with God; from that point I decided to do whatever God calls me to; I was never the same.
About a year after I had graduated from Bible College, I was working at a bank, doing very well, number one in sales for the majority of my time working there. Life was good, I was involved in some ministries at my church, but I just didn’t feel satisfied working a regular job, doing regular things. I always imagined myself traveling and not living the “ordinary” life. I wasn’t sure what my future would look like, but I knew it couldn’t be this.
In July 2008, Tommie Zito Ministries came to my church; it was a life-changing week in more ways than one. That week I had some awesome experiences in the presence of God, and I also met my husband Dan. The following year on September 17th, 2009 we were married. Right after our honeymoon we began traveling on the road full time, ministering together with TZM. It has been a blast.
From the beginning, we had talked about going to another country into the mission field. The opportunity surfaced at the beginning of 2010 and we began to explore our options, and the Lord began to open the doors. Together we are going to Guatemala to help in the administration of a brand new children’s home, “Casa de Alabbanza” I am going to be director of the home; my heart is to bring these children hope and a future, to watch them be radically changed through the love of Christ. We want the home to be a place of transformation. My husband is going to be working alongside me and helping in any way possible. He will also be working on developing sponsorship and funding for us, and for the home, as well as documenting the happenings of what is taking place in Guatemala and the children’s home. Together we want to be able to bring people the experience of Guatemala, people who perhaps will never be able to go to Guatemala themselves, and help them be a part in a real and active way using video, pictures, and the Internet. We want to give people a reason and a desire to support such an endeavor with their time and charitable donations. Together we will change lives one child at a time.
